“You must eat the salad because it is nutritious” : argumentative strategies adopted by parents and children in food-related discussions at mealtimes

Bova, Antonio ; Arcidiacono, Francesco

In: Appetite, 2014, vol. 73, p. 81-94

At mealtimes, the evaluation of the appropriate (or not appropriate) behavior concerning the food is often assumed as a topic of discourse. The aim of this study is to single out the argumentative strategies used by parents with their children and by children with their parents in order to convince the other party to eat or not to eat a certain food. Within a data corpus constituted by 30...

Yardstick regulation of electricity distribution utilities based on the estimation of an average cost function

Filippini, Massimo ; Wild, Jörg

In this paper we estimate an average-cost function for a panel of 45 Swiss electricity distribution utilities as a basis for yardstick regulation of the distribution-network access prices. Unlike the existing literature, we separate the electricity sales function of utilities from the network operation function. Several exogenous variables measuring the heterogeneity of the service areas were...

Yan theorem in L ∞ with applications to asset pricing

Cassese, Gianluca

In: Acta mathematicae applicatae sinica, 2007, vol. 23, no. 4, p. 551-562

We prove an L∞ version of Yan theorem and deduce from it a necessary condition for the absence of free lunches in a model of financial markets in which asset prices are a continuous Rd valued process and only simple investment strategies are admissible. Our proof is based on a new separation theorem for convex sets of finitely additive measures.

Written versus spoken queries : a qualitative and quantitative comparative analysis

Crestani, Fabio ; Du, Heather

In: Journal of the American Society for information science and technology, 2006, vol. 57, no. 7, p. 881-890

This paper reports on an experimental study on the differences between spoken and written queries. A set of written and spontaneous spoken queries are generated by users from written topics. These two sets of queries are compared in qualitative terms and in terms of their retrieval effectiveness. Written and spoken queries are compared in terms of length, duration, and part of speech. In...

World monetary disorders : exchange rate erratic fluctuations

Cencini, Alvaro

This paper shows why all analyses proposed to explain and predict exchange rate fluctuations have not fulfilled their ambitious aim and it investigates how the problem should be tackled in order to develop a solution that guarantees an intrinsic exchange rate stability. In the first two sections it is proved that, contrary to what is often believed, exchange rate fluctuations are caused by...

World monetary discrepancies : A new macroeconomic analysis

Cencini, Alvaro

This paper suggests that the global current account and global capital and financial account discrepancies are the twin result of a common cause. This cause can be identified in the payment of net interests on debt. Re-interpreting the World Bank’s definition of capital flight, we will show that both discrepancies can be consistently accounted for by Schmitt’s analysis of the double charge...

Workload characterization of JVM languages

Sarimbekov, Aibek ; Binder, Walter (Dir.)

Thèse de doctorat : Università della Svizzera italiana, 2014 ; 2014INFO003.

Being developed with a single language in mind, namely Java, the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) nowadays is targeted by numerous programming languages. Automatic memory management, Just-In-Time (JIT) compilation, and adaptive optimizations provided by the JVM make it an attractive target for different language implementations. Even though being targeted by so many languages, the JVM has been tuned...
