L’Impartial is an independent daily newspaper in Neuchâtel, founded in
1881 in la Chaux-de-Fonds by Alexandre Courvoisier. In 1967, its publisher
took over the Feuille d’Avis des Montagnes, a daily publication from Le
Locle with a circulation of 6,200 copies. The Feuille d’Avis des Montagnes,
the major daily newspaper in the mountain region of Neuchâtel, was also
founded by the Courvoisier family, in 1806. This family has long been
active in the press and printing fields in the area; it was only in 1987
that the descendents ceded the ownership of the company to the businessman
and watch manufacturer Pierre-Alain Blum. He kept only L’Impartial and its
rotary press, under the management of its director and chief editor Gill
Baillod.
In 1992, the Bienne publisher Gassmann acquired a majority stake in L’Impartial before a close editorial cooperation was agreed with l’Express in 1996 after many years of rivalry. The merge of the two publishing companies was effective in 1999 within the SNP Société Neuchâteloise de Presse, though the two titles continue to appear under their own name.
Today in 2009, L’Impartial, which covers the two districts of the Neuchâtel mountain region (La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle) as well as the Jura district of the Franches-Montagnes and the Vallon de St-Imier in Bernese Jura, has a circulation of 14,388 copies.
