English French In December 2020, the Olympic Foundation for Culture and Heritage received the "Butterfly" costume as a donation. Worn at the Opening Ceremony of the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996, the costume was designed by Peter Minshall, a Trinidadian artist known for his Carnival costumes. The "Butterfly" costume, consisting of a pair of wings with a length of about 4 meters and accessories, was kept in Philadelphia at the time. It was transported to the Foundation's collections by boat, to the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, in a wooden box. The current storage conditions of the costume do not meet the conservational requirements. In time, the wings and accessories could be subject to deterioration and degradation. Therefore, the Foundation would like to find a suitable conditioning that would allow the proper conservation of the costume on the one hand, and on the other hand, that would be suitable for transport between the external storage area and the reserves of the institution. Several packaging proposals have been presented after considering constraints such as the structural and chemical weaknesses of the costume and limited available space and infrastructure on site. The final solution that has been chosen is to pack the wings vertically. This option reconciles the requirements to conserve costume appropriately and the requirements of the institution, as it allows to store the wings without changing their shape whilst limiting the required space for storage. Possible concerns related to the conservation of plastic materials have been taken into account for the development of the packaging concept as well as in the choice and selection of the materials used. The design of the packaging was delivered in the form of captioned detailed drawings together with the cost for the required materials. The present work aims to present the history of the costume, to describe the main alterations referenced on the wings and accessories and to answer the problems linked to the packaging of such an item, from the physical and chemical point of view.
