    Summary
    Through their function as ‘figures of the third', messengers have taken on a special position in reflections on media and mediality. At the same time, this process has led to the messenger's de-historicization. This paper's aim is to relocate the figure of the messenger in the specific historical setting of the Late Middle Ages. For through sole focus on messengers, something has been lost: the specific ensemble of messenger and letter and their constitutive materiality
