Mémoire de diplôme HES: Haute Ecole Arc Conservation-Restauration, 2006

English French German The goal of this Diploma work is to examine whether essential oils can inhibit the growth of mould on wooden objects. The activity to inhibit the fungal growth of Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Eugenia caryophyllata, Satureja montana and Origanum vulgare in different ethanol concentrations ranging from 1% to 50% were examined in practical experiments at the laboratory of microbiology at EMPA St.Gallen (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research, Wood Laboratory, Microbiological Working Group). The effectiveness of these essential oils were compared with a commercial Biozid, the carbamate preparation Preventol® MP 100 (IPBC, 0.25% ethanol). In the first and theoretical part of this work, explications to the properties of aromatic plants and the use of their essential oils in conservation as well as in other ranges of application are given. An introduction to mycology, the prerequisite of fungal growth on wooden objects and an observation of the health risks of moulds are following, plus some methods for treatment on physical, chemical and biological base.
