Whole-genome sequence of a colombian Acinetobacter baumannii strain, a coproducer of OXA-72 and OXA-255-like carbapenemases

Saavedra, Sandra Yamile ; Prada-Cardozo, Diego ; Rincón, Verónica ; Pérez-Cardona, Hermes ; Hidalgo, Andrea Melissa ; González, María Nilse ; Reguero, María T. ; Silva, Emilia M. Valenzuela de ; Mantilla, José R. ; Falquet, Laurent ; Barreto-Hernández, Emiliano ; Duarte, Carolina

In: Genome Announcements, 2017, vol. 5, no. 7, p. e01558-16

Colombian Acinetobacter baumannii strain ST920 was isolated from the sputum of a 68-year-old male patient. This isolate possessed blaOXA-72 and blaOXA-255-like genes. The assembled genome contained 4,104,098 pb and 38.79% G+C content. This is the first case reported of the coproduction (blaOXA-72 and blaOXA-255-like) of carbapenem-hydrolyzing class D β-lactamases (CHDLs) in Acinetobacter...

Draft genome sequence of the virulent Clostridium chauvoei reference strain JF4335

Falquet, Laurent ; Calderon-Copete, Sandra P. ; Frey, Joachim

In: Genome Announcements, 2013, vol. 1, no. 4, p. -

Clostridium chauvoei is the etiological agent of blackleg, a disease of cattle and sheep with high mortality rates, causing severe economic losses in livestock production. Here, we report the draft genome sequence of the virulent C. chauvoei strain JF4335 (2.8 Mbp and 28% G+C content) and the annotation of the genome.

Draft genome sequences of multidrug-resistant acinetobacter sp. strains from colombian hospitals

Barreto-Hernández, Emiliano ; Falquet, Laurent ; Reguero, María T. ; Mantilla, José R. ; Valenzuela, Emilia M. ; González, Elsa ; Cepeda, Alexandra ; Escalante, Andrea

In: Genome Announcements, 2013, vol. 1, no. 6, p. -

The draft genome sequences of the strains Acinetobacter baumannii 107m, Acinetobacter nosocomialis 28F, and Acinetobacter pittii 42F, isolated from Colombian hospitals, are reported here. These isolates are causative of nosocomial infections and are classified as multidrug resistant, as they showed resistance to four different antibiotic groups.

In: Journal of Global Antimicrobial Resistance, 2020, vol. 22, p. 832–834

Objectives: This study describes the first draft genome sequence of a multidrug- resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli D-ST69 clinical isolate from Egypt carrying blaNDM-1 and blaOXA-244.Methods: The strain was isolated in December 2014 from a wound pus swab of a male patient in the city of Kafr El-Sheikh using MacConkey agar containing 2 μg/mL meropenem. The strain was subjected to antimicrobial ...

Linking comparative genomics of nine potato-associated pseudomonas isolates with their differing biocontrol potential against late blight

Vrieze, Mout De ; Varadarajan, Adithi R. ; Schneeberger, Kerstin ; Bailly, Aurélien ; Rohr, Rudolf P. ; Ahrens, Christian H. ; Weisskopf, Laure

In: Frontiers in Microbiology, 2020, vol. 11, p. 857

For plants, the advantages of associating with beneficial bacteria include plant growth promotion, reduction of abiotic and biotic stresses and enhanced protection against various pests and diseases. Beneficial bacteria rightly equipped for successful plant colonization and showing antagonistic activity toward plant pathogens seem to be actively recruited by plants. To gain more insights into...

Large-scale comparison of toxin and antitoxins in Listeria monocytogenes

Agüero, José Antonio ; Akarsu, Hatice ; Aguilar-Bultet, Lisandra ; Oevermann, Anna ; Falquet, Laurent

In: Toxins, 2020, vol. 12, no. 1, p. 29

Toxin–antitoxin systems (TASs) are widely distributed in prokaryotes and encode pairs of genes involved in many bacterial biological processes and mechanisms, including pathogenesis. The TASs have not been extensively studied in Listeria monocytogenes (Lm), a pathogenic bacterium of the Firmicutes phylum causing infections in animals and humans. Using our recently published TASmania...

DeltaRpkm: an R package for a rapid detection of differential gene presence between related bacterial genomes

Akarsu, Hatice ; Aguilar-Bultet, Lisandra ; Falquet, Laurent

In: BMC Bioinformatics, 2019, vol. 20, no. 1, p. 621

Comparative genomics has seen the development of many software performing the clustering, polymorphism and gene content analysis of genomes at different phylogenetic levels (isolates, species). These tools rely on de novo assembly and/or multiple alignments that can be computationally intensive for large datasets. With a large number of similar genomes in particular, e.g., in surveillance and...

Large-scale analysis of the mycoplasma bovis genome identified non-essential, adhesion- and virulence-related genes

Josi, Christoph ; Bürki, Sibylle ; Vidal, Sara ; Dordet-Frisoni, Emilie ; Citti, Christine ; Falquet, Laurent ; Pilo, Paola

In: Frontiers in Microbiology, 2019, vol. 10, p. -

Mycoplasma bovis is an important pathogen of cattle causing bovine mycoplasmosis. Clinical manifestations are numerous, but pneumonia, mastitis, and arthritis cases are mainly reported. Currently, no efficient vaccine is available and antibiotic treatments are not always satisfactory. The design of new, efficient prophylactic and therapeutic approaches requires a better understanding of the...

Immune stealth-driven O2 serotype prevalence and potential for therapeutic antibodies against multidrug resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae

Pennini, Meghan E. ; De Marco, Anna ; Pelletier, Mark ; Bonnell, Jessica ; Cvitkovic, Romana ; Beltramello, Martina ; Cameroni, Elisabetta ; Bianchi, Siro ; Zatta, Fabrizia ; Zhao, Wei ; Xiao, Xiaodong ; Camara, Maria M. ; DiGiandomenico, Antonio ; Semenova, Elena ; Lanzavecchia, Antonio ; Warrener, Paul ; Suzich, JoAnn ; Wang, Qun ; Corti, Davide ; Stover, C. Kendall

In: Nature communications, 2017, vol. 8, p. 1991

Emerging multidrug-resistant bacteria are a challenge for modern medicine, but how these pathogens are so successful is not fully understood. Robust antibacterial vaccines have prevented and reduced resistance suggesting a pivotal role for immunity in deterring antibiotic resistance. Here, we show the increased prevalence of Klebsiella pneumoniae lipopolysaccharide O2 serotype strains in all...
