A new glirid-like cricetid from the lower Oligocene of Southern China

Lu, Xiao-Yu ; Ni, Xijun ; Maridet, Olivier

In: Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, 2021, p. e1917587

Here we report a new cricetid s.l., Caecocricetodon yani, gen. et sp. nov., discovered in the early Oligocene of the Caijiachong Formation in Yunnan Province, China. The new cricetid differs from all known cricetids or stem muroids by its particular molar pattern displaying numerous crests and spurs. Our phylogenetic analysis based on a matrix including 42 taxa and 72 characters indicates...

Neuroanatomy of the spinosaurid Irritator challengeri (Dinosauria: Theropoda) indicates potential adaptations for piscivory

Schade, Marco ; Rauhut, Oliver W. M. ; Evers, Serjoscha W.

In: Scientific Reports, 2020, vol. 10, no. 1, p. 9259

Spinosauridae, a theropod group characterized by elongated snouts, conical teeth, enlarged forelimbs, and often elongated neural spines, show evidence for semiaquatic adaptations and piscivory. It is currently debated if these animals represent terrestrial carnivores with adaptations for a piscivorous diet, or if they largely lived and foraged in aquatic habitats. The holotype of Irritator...

A toothed turtle from the Late Jurassic of China and the global biogeographic history of turtles

Joyce, Walter G. ; Rab, Márton ; Clark, James M. ; Xu, Xing

In: BMC Evolutionary Biology, 2016, vol. 16, p. 236

Turtles (Testudinata) are a successful lineage of vertebrates with about 350 extant species that inhabit all major oceans and landmasses with tropical to temperate climates. The rich fossil record of turtles documents the adaptation of various sub- lineages to a broad range of habitat preferences, but a synthetic biogeographic model is still lacking for the group. Results: We herein describe a...

New insights into the lifestyle of Allosaurus (Dinosauria: Theropoda) based on another specimen with multiple pathologies

Foth, Christian ; Evers, Serjoscha W. ; Pabst, Ben ; Mateus, Octávio ; Flisch, Alexander ; Patthey, Mike ; Rauhut, Oliver W.M.

In: PeerJ, 2015, vol. 3, p. e940

Adult large-bodied theropods are often found with numerous pathologies. A large, almost complete, probably adult Allosaurus specimen from the Howe Stephens Quarry, Morrison Formation (Late Kimmeridgian–Early Tithonian), Wyoming, exhibits multiple pathologies. Pathologic bones include the left dentary, two cervical vertebrae, one cervical and several dorsal ribs, the left scapula, the left...

The first soft-shelled turtle from the Jehol Biota of China

Lia, Lu ; Joyce, Walter G. ; Liu, Jun

In: Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, 2015, vol. 35, no. 2, p. e909450

A new turtle from the Early Cretaceous (Aptian) Jiufotang Formation of western Liaoning, China, Perochelys lamadongensis, gen. et sp. nov., represents the first species of soft-shelled turtle from the Jehol Biota. The new taxon is diagnosed by the combination of the following characters: nuchal bone about five times wider than long; preneural absent; reversal of the orientation in the neural...
