The rise of angiosperms pushed conifers to decline during global cooling

Condamine, Fabien L. ; Silvestro, Daniele ; Koppelhus, Eva B. ; Antonelli, Alexandre

In: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2020, vol. 117, no. 46, p. 28867–28875

Competition among species and entire clades can impact species diversification and extinction, which can shape macroevolutionary patterns. The fossil record shows successive biotic turnovers such that a dominant group is replaced by another. One striking example involves the decline of gymnosperms and the rapid diversification and ecological dominance of angiosperms in the Cretaceous. It is...

Skin proteomics – analysis of the extracellular matrix in health and disease

Dengjel, Jörn ; Bruckner-Tuderman, Leena ; Nyström, Alexander

In: Expert Review of Proteomics, 2020, vol. 17, no. 5, p. 377–391

Introduction The skin protects the human body from external insults and regulates water and temperature homeostasis. A highly developed extracellular matrix (ECM) supports the skin and instructs its cell functions. Reduced functionality of the ECM is often associated with skin diseases that cause physical impairment and also have implications on social interactions and quality of life of...

How much can bulk stores help reduce carbon footprint by limiting plastic food packaging ?

Jarel Rodriguez, Anaïs ; Milet, Emmanuel (Dir.)

Mémoire de bachelor : Haute école de gestion de Genève, 2020 ; TDIBM 67.

This report focuses on the quantity of food packaging waste consumed by an average single individual, residing in Switzerland. It is based on the household budget survey published by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO). This budget survey mentions the food quantities monthly consumed by a single individual and thus, the packaging waste could be computed accordingly. The objective is to compare...

Tissue-specific transcription footprinting using RNA PoI DamID (RAPID) in Caenorhabditis elegans

Gómez-Saldivar, Georgina ; Osuna-Luque, Jaime ; Semple, Jennifer I. ; Glauser, Dominique A. ; Jarriault, Sophie ; Meister, Peter

In: Genetics, 2020, vol. 216, no. 4, p. 931–945

Differential gene expression across cell types underlies development and cell physiology in multicellular organisms. Caenorhabditis elegans is a powerful, extensively used model to address these biological questions. A remaining bottleneck relates to the difficulty to obtain comprehensive tissue-specific gene transcription data, since available methods are still challenging to execute and/or...

A novel interaction between the TLR7 and a colchicine derivative revealed through a computational and experimental study

Gentile, Francesco ; Deriu, Marco A. ; Barakat, Khaled ; Danani, Andrea ; Tuszynski, Jack

In: Pharmaceuticals, 2018, vol. 11, no. 1, p. 22

The Toll-Like Receptor 7 (TLR7) is an endosomal membrane receptor involved in the innate immune system response. Its best-known small molecule activators are imidazoquinoline derivatives such as imiquimod (R-837) and resiquimod (R-848). Recently, an interaction between R-837 and the colchicine binding site of tubulin was reported. To investigate the possibility of an interaction between...

An arbitrary-function light power controller

Grujić, Zoran D. ; Piller, Jari ; Weis, Antoine

In: Review of Scientific Instruments, 2018, vol. 89, no. 2, p. 025114

We describe the design, applications, and performance of a simple light power controller. The device is built on a fiber-coupled electro-optic modulator with an active electronic feedback. It can be used to actively stabilize laser power or to impress an arbitrary waveform onto the power. The bandwidth of the device is ∼70 kHz.
