Mapping the development of visual information use for facial expression recognition

Rodger, Helen ; Caldara, Roberto (Dir.)

Thèse de doctorat : Université de Fribourg, 2019.

In this thesis, I aimed to map the development of facial expression recognition from early childhood up to adulthood by identifying for the first time in the literature the quantity and quality of visual information needed to recognise the six 'basic' emotions. Using behavioural and eye tracking measures, the original contributions of this thesis include: 1. An unbiased fine-grained mapping of...

  • The view that the N170 ERP is not modulated by the emotional content of faces (Ashley et al. 2004; Eimer and Holmes 2002; KrolakSalmon et al. 2001) has been challenged by other findings (Batty and Taylor 2003; Blau et al. 2007; Jaworska et al. 2010; Psychopharmacology (2013) 225:227–239 Krombholz et al. 2007; Schyns et al. 2007; Sprengelmeyer and Jentzsch 2006; Stekelenburg and de Gelder 2004), even when faces are non-consciously processed (Pegna et al. 2008; Smith 2011)....

Moving towards the understanding of dynamic human face processing

Richoz, Anne-Raphaëlle ; Caldara, Roberto (Dir.)

Thèse de doctorat : Université de Fribourg, 2018.

The human visual system is steadily stimulated by dynamic cues. Faces provide crucial information about identity, gender, ethnicity, speech, attention, eye-gaze direction, or emotions, all important for adapted social interactions. From an evolutionary perspective, humans have been more extensively exposed to dynamic faces, as static face images have only appeared recently with the advent of...

Local Jekyll and Global Hyde: The Dual Identity of Face Identification

Miellet, Sébastien ; Caldara, Roberto ; Schyns, Philippe

In: Psychological Science, 2011, vol. 22, no. 12, p. 1518-1526

The main concern in face-processing research is to understand the processes underlying the identification of faces. In the study reported here, we addressed this issue by examining whether local or global information supports face identification. We developed a new methodology called “iHybrid.” This technique combines two famous identities in a gaze-contingent paradigm, which...
