Dental anomaly in a middle Miocene fossil of the genus Spermophilinus (Rodentia, Sciuridae) from southern Germany

Prieto, Jérôme ; Rummel, Michael ; Peláez-Campomanes, Pablo ; Vasilyan, Davit

In: Fossil Imprint, 2020, vol. 76, no. 1, p. 174-180

The maxillary presented in this work has been excavated in the middle Miocene karst filling Petersbuch 136 (Germany, Bavaria) and shows the oldest evidence of dental anomaly in a sciurid. The aberrant morphology, probably hyperdontia or no replacement of roots of deciduous teeth, affects the area of the P3, a tooth that is generally not well documented in the Spermophilinus record.

Accurate estimation of membrane capacitance from atomistic molecular dynamics simulations of zwitterionic lipid bilayers

Lipid membranes are indispensable to life, and they regulate countless cellular processes. To investigate the properties of membranes under controlled conditions, numerous reconstitution methods have been developed over the last few decades. Several of these methods result in the formation of lipid bilayers containing residual hydrophobic molecules between the two monolayers. These...

New data on the Miocene dormouse Simplomys García-Paredes, 2009 from the peri-alpin basins of Switzerland and Germany: palaeodiversity of a rare genus in Central Europe

Prieto, Jérôme ; Lu, Xiao-Yu ; Maridet, Olivier ; Becker, Damien ; Pirkenseer, Claudius ; Rauber, Gaëtan ; Peláez-Campomanes, Pablo

In: Palaeobiodiversity and Palaeoenvironments, 2019, vol. 99, no. 3, p. 527–543

Simplomys, a dormouse with a simple dental morphology compared to other glirids, shows a continuous evolution in Spain during the end of the Ramblian and up to the middle Aragonian, the stratigraphic frame considered in this work. In contrast, the record of the genus in Central Europe is reduced to a few localities spanning from the early to the middle Miocene. We review the record from the...

Local accumulation of diacylglycerol alters membrane properties nonlinearly due to its transbilayer activity

Campomanes, Pablo ; Zoni, Valeria ; Vanni, Stefano

In: Communications Chemistry, 2019, vol. 2, no. 1, p. 72

Diacylglycerols (DAGs) are bioactive lipids that are ubiquitously present at low concentrations in cellular membranes. Upon the activation of lipid remodeling enzymes such as phospholipase C and phosphatidic acid phosphatase, DAG concentration increases, leading to a disruption of the lamellar phase of lipid membranes. To investigate the structural origin of these phenomena, here we develop ...

An atomistic look into bio-inspired nanoparticles and their molecular interactions with cells

Petretto, Emanuele ; Campomanes, Pablo ; Stellacci, Francesco ; Rothen-Rutishauser, Barbara ; Petri-Fink, Alke ; Vanni, Stefano

In: CHIMIA International Journal for Chemistry, 2019, vol. 73, no. 1, p. 78–80

Nanoparticles (NPs) have sizes that approach those of pathogens and they can interact with the membranes of eukaryotic cells in an analogous fashion. Typically, NPs are taken up by the cell via the plasma membrane by receptor-mediated processes and subsequently interact with various endomembranes. Unlike pathogens, however, NPs lack the remarkable specificity gained during the evolutionary...
