Neuralink and Beyond: Challenges of Creating an Enhanced Human

Gurtner, Dimitri

(Internal working papers DIUF ; 21-01)

This article is a literature review of Neuralink, brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) and their applications, followed by future possibilities of BMIs and their potential impacts. Currently, BMIs predominantly have therapeutic applications, such as helping people with spinal cord injury by allowing them to control a computer directly with their brain. However, BMIs can also improve learning,...

Adverse Effects of Monitoring: Evidence from a field experiment

Herz, Holger ; Zihlmann, Christian

(Working Papers SES ; 522)

We conduct a field experiment with remote workers to assess potential adverse effects of monitoring. We find that monitoring reduces the average performance of workers, in particular among the intrinsically motivated workforce. Moreover, monitoring cultivates the average worker: There are fewer high performers and the variance in performance is significantly reduced. Importantly, we show that...

Assessing the effects of seasonal tariff-rate quotas on vegetable prices in Switzerland

Loginova, Daria ; Portmann, Marco ; Huber, Martin

(Working Papers SES ; 521)

Causal estimation of the short-term effects of tariff-rate quotas (TRQs) on vegetable producer prices is hampered by the large variety and different growing seasons of vegetables and is therefore rarely performed. We quantify the effects of Swiss seasonal TRQs on domestic producer prices of a variety of vegetables based on a difference-indifferences estimation using a novel dataset of weekly...

Unfallrisiko verschiedener Schichtsysteme : Simulation mit dem XIMES-Risikorechner

Arlinghaus, Anna ; Gärtner, Johannes

In: sozialpolitik.ch, 2020, vol. 3, no. 1, p. Forum: 3.1

Working time arrangements can affect the risk of injuries and accidents at work. To evaluate the risk associated with common shift schedules, five different schedules were analyzed and compared regarding their inherent accident risks, using the XIMES Risk Calculator. We included fast forward and slow backward rotated shift schedules, 12-hour-shift systems and long daily working hours....

In: sozialpolitik.ch, 2020, vol. 3, no. 5, p. Article: 3.5

Overtime is widely spread in Germany. Representative data from 7.765 respondents from the BAuA-Working Time Survey 2017 show that employees work an average of 3.9 hours per week longer than contractually agreed, with differences according to gender, full-time work, qualification levels and occupations. More than half of these are transitory overtime hours, which are compensated by free time....

Das Leben ist Synchronisation : Möglichkeiten und Formen sozialer Teilhabe vor dem Hintergrund atypischer Arbeitszeiten

Stadler, Bettina ; Schönauer, Annika ; Arlinghaus, Anna ; Saupe, Bernhard ; Eichmann, Hubert

In: sozialpolitik.ch, 2020, vol. 3, no. 4, p. Article: 3.4

The influence of atypical working hours, i.e. long working hours or working hours outside the usual hours, on health and accident risks is well documented. Less well documented is the relationship between atypical working hours and the opportunities for social participation. In this paper we present the results of a qualitative survey on work-time related impairments of social participation...

Neue Gestaltungsoptionen für humane Nacht- und Schichtarbeit? : Experteneinschätzungen am Beispiel Digitalisierung

Evers, Maren

In: sozialpolitik.ch, 2020, vol. 3, no. 3, p. Article: 3.3

Shift Work and Work-Family Conflict : A Systematic Review

Wöhrmann, Anne Marit ; Müller, Grit ; Ewert, Kathrin

In: sozialpolitik.ch, 2020, vol. 3, no. 2, p. Article: 3.2

Shift work occupies precious time for family and social life. The aim of this review was to systematically assess the state of research on the impact of shift work on work-fam-ily conflict. A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed and EBSCO to identify studies published between 1990 and 2017. In the end, 36 articles met the inclusion criteria and were considered in this review....
