The conversion of family farms in Southland" : A case study for “rural futures: building adaptive management capability to deliver sustainable pastoral farm systems”

Forney, Jérémie

Project description This research on farm conversions in Southland is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation as an independent project. It has joined the RURAL FUTURES project (a MSI funded programme) to serve as a case study of the social aspects involved in farmers’ decision-making. The aim of the research is to identify non-economic motivators to farm conversion....

Does a good argument make a good answer? Argumentative reconstruction of children's justifications in a second order false belief task

Lombardi, Elisabetta ; Greco, Sara ; Massaro, Davide ; Schär, Rebecca ; Manzi, Federico ; Iannaccone, Antonio ; Perret-Clermont, Anne-Nelly ; Marchetti, Antonella

In: Learning, Culture and Social Interaction, 2018, vol. 18, p. 13-27

This paper proposes a novel approach to interpret the results of a classical second-order false belief task (the ice cream man task) administered to children in order to investigate their Theory of Mind. We adopted a dialogical perspective to study the adult-child discussion in this research setting. In particular, we see the adult-child conversation as an argumentative discussion in which...

Properties and constructions of codes with the rank and the subspace metric

Ravagnani, Alberto ; Gorla, Elisa (Dir.)

Thèse de doctorat : Université de Neuchâtel, 2016.

In 2000 Ahlswede, Cai, Li, and Yeung discovered that employing coding techniques in network transmissions at the intermediate nodes of the network may give substantial gains in information throughput. These results originated a new research field, called network coding, concerned with efficiency and reliability of communications over networks. Network coding started to draw the attention...

Sporulation capability and metabolic mechanisms of endospore-forming Firmicutes under conditions limiting for growth and survival

Filippidou, Sevasti ; Junier, Pilar (Dir.)

Thèse de doctorat : Université de Neuchâtel, 2016.

Life, as we know it, has physical and chemical limits. More precisely, physical and chemical environmental parameters set the thresholds for reproduction, metabolism and survival for the organisms known to date. Environmental conditions unsuitable for survival and development are the rule rather than the exception in most habitats. Microorganisms have developed various strategies to withstand...

Broadband terahertz pulse generation driven by an ultrafast thin-disk laser oscillator

Clément, Paradis ; Drs, Jakub ; Modsching, Norbert ; Razskazovskaya, Olga ; Meyer, Frank ; Kränkel, Christian ; Saraceno, Clara J ; Wittwer, Valentin J ; Südmeyer, Thomas

In: Optics Express, 2018, vol. 26, no. 20, p. 26377-26384

We demonstrate broadband THz generation driven by an ultrafast thin-disk laser (TDL) oscillator. By optical rectification of 50-fs pulses at 61 MHz repetition rate in a collinear geometry in crystalline GaP, THz radiation with a central frequency at around 3.4 THz and a spectrum extending from below 1 THz to nearly 7 THz are generated. We realized a spectroscopic characterization of a GaP crystal...

Kerr lens mode-locked Yb:CALGO thin-disk laser

Modsching, Norbert ; Paradis, Clément ; Labaye, François ; Gaponenko, Maxim ; Graumann, Ivan J ; Diebold, Andreas ; Emaury, Florian ; Wittwer, Valentin J ; Südmeyer, Thomas

In: Optics Letters, 2018, vol. 43, no. 4, p. 879-882

We demonstrate the first Kerr lens mode-locked Yb:CaGdAlO4 (Yb:CALGO) thin-disk laser oscillator. It generates pulses with a duration of 30 fs at a central wavelength of 1048 nm and a repetition rate of 124 MHz. The laser emits the shortest pulses generated by a thin-disk laser oscillator, equal to the shortest pulse duration obtained by Yb-doped bulk oscillators. The average output...

Practical erasure codes for storage systems : the study of entanglement codes, an approach that propagates redundancy to increase reliability and performance

Estrada Galiñanes, Verónica del Carmen ; Felber, Pascal (Dir.)

Thèse de doctorat : Université de Neuchâtel, 2017.

This dissertation deals with the design of practical erasure codes for storage systems. Hardware and logical disk failures are a common source of system failures that may lead to data loss. Nevertheless, it is predicted that spinning disks would remain the standard storage medium in large datacenters. Cloud storage needs efficient codes to become reliable despite its low-cost components. As...

Ramsey spectroscopy in a Rubidium vapor cell and realization of an ultra-stable atomic clock

Gharavipour, Mohammadreza ; Mileti, Gaetano (Dir.)

Thèse de doctorat : Université de Neuchâtel, 2018.

Various application fields in industry, telecommunication, navigation and space demand reliable, compact, high-performance frequency standards with a stability level of −14 at 105s (equivalent to <1ns/day). Thanks to semiconductor technology, optical pumping technique with a laser has opened up new schemes based on laser-microwave double-resonance (DR), such as...

The impact of official development assistance on the donor's economy : the case of Switzerland

López, Luciano ; Zarin-Nejadan, Milad (Dir.)

Thèse de doctorat : Université de Neuchâtel, 2018 ; 2696.

This thesis investigates the impact of Official Development Assistance (ODA) on the donor's economy in the case of Switzerland. As a first step, chapter 1 discusses a flow-of-funds approach to quantify the impact of bilateral and multilateral ODA on the donor country's economy. The simple yet rigorous methodology employed allows to compute both, the primary (immediate) and the final impacts of...
