Synthesis and applications of nanocontainers and nanorattles

Abram, Sarah-Luise ; Yep, Philippe ; Fromm, Katharina M.

In: CHIMIA International Journal for Chemistry, 2019, vol. 73, no. 1, p. 12–16

Nanorattles and hollow nanocontainers have unique properties related to the presence of a void space inside the shell, which has been shown to improve the properties of materials for e.g. catalysis, drug release, sensor materials or lithium ion batteries. This article summarizes our recent progress in the synthesis of hollow silica, titania and ceria nanorattles and nanocontainers, eventually...

Handling (nano)silver as antimicrobial agent: therapeutic window, dissolution dynamics, detection methods and molecular interactions

Abram, Sarah‐Luise ; Fromm, Katharina M.

In: Chemistry – A European Journal, 2020, vol. 26, no. 48, p. 10948–10971

Silver is an antimicrobial agent well known since antiquity. With the emergence of multiresistant bacteria, it has come back into the focus of research, and ionic as well as nano‐sized silver have been studied in vitro and in vivo. The results are controversial, silver being discussed as the “silver bullet” or a “wolf in sheep's clothing”. A thorough search of literature from...

Ag Nanoencapsulation for Antimicrobial Applications

Abram, Sarah-Luise ; Gagnon, Jacinthe ; Priebe, Magdalena ; Hérault, Nelly ; Fromm, Katharina M.

In: CHIMIA International Journal for Chemistry, 2018, vol. 72, no. 4, p. 249–252

Biomaterial-related infections remain a significant challenge in medicine. Antimicrobial materials on the basis of Ag nanoparticles represent a promising solution for this issue. Therefore several Ag-containing nanocontainers and nanorattles have been synthesized and characterized that exhibit remarkable control over the release of Ag+ as antimicrobial active species. Their biological...

Synthesis of Novel Fluorinated Hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronenes

Aebischer, Olivier F. ; Tondo, Patrick ; Alameddine, Bassam ; Jenny, Titus A.

In: Synthesis, 2006, vol. 17, p. 2891–2896

The synthesis of several perfluoroalkylated hexabenzocoronene derivatives is described. The substituents range from linear semiperfluoroalkylated chains to branched perfluoroalkylated chains. Novel strategies were applied to overcome the low solubility and the low reactivity of such chains.

Self-aggregated perfluoroalkylated hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene fibers observed by cryo-SEM and fluorescence spectroscopy

Aebischer, Olivier F. ; Aebischer, Annina ; Tondo, Patrick ; Alameddine, Bassam ; Dadras, Massoud ; Güdel, Hans-Ulrich ; Jenny, Titus A.

In: Chemical Communications, 2006, p. 4221 - 4223

The self-assembled architectures in solution of a new HBC derivative bearing perfluoroalkylated side chains were investigated by optical excitation and emission spectroscopy and correlated to cryo-SEM, a new technique in organic chemistry.

Controlling the lateral aggregation of perfluoroalkylated hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronenes

Aebischer, Olivier F. ; Aebischer, Annina ; Donnio, Bertrand ; Alameddine, Bassam ; Dadras, Massoud ; Güdel, Hans-Ulrich ; Guillon, Daniel ; Jenny, Titus A.

In: Journal of Materials Chemistry, 2007, vol. 17, no. 13, p. 1262-1267

The investigation of two hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) derivatives carrying linear or branched perfluoroalkylated side chains is reported. Polycondensed aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) such as HBC derivatives are well known to self-organize to form highly ordered monomolecular stacks, which in turn show a concentration- and solvent-dependent lateral aggregation. However, possible...

Controlling the supramolecular assembly of perfluorinated polycondensed aromatic hydrocarbons by side chain engineering

Aebischer, Olivier F. ; Jenny, Titus (Dir.) ; Weiss, Antoine (Codir.)

Synthesis of Hexa-peri-hexobenzocoronenes Carrying Linear or Branched Perfluoroalkylated Side Chains

Aebischer, Olivier F. ; Muñoz, David T. ; Tondo, Patrick ; Débieux, Jean-Luc ; Jenny, Titus A.

In: Synthesis, 2010, vol. 7, p. 1123-1140

Substituted disc-shaped perfluoroalkylated hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronenes (HBC), known to self-assemble into conducting ordered architectures, were synthesized and characterized. A systematic variation of the linear or branched perfluoroalkylated side chains was performed in order to screen the influence of the lateral chain on their one-dimensional self-aggregation.

Synthesis of perfluoroalkylated bulky triarylamines

Alameddine, Bassam ; Savary, Corinne ; Aebischer, Olivier ; Jenny, Titus A.

In: Synthesis, 2007, p. 271-276

The synthesis of two new triarylamine compounds bearing perfluoroalkylated side chains is described. Good thermal stabilities combined with a blue emission make these compounds promising candidates for materials applications.

Synthesis and investigation of new large self-assembled supramolecules as potential electron emitters

Alameddine, Bassam ; Jenny, Titus (Dir.)

Thèse de doctorat : Université de Fribourg, 2004 ; no 1440.

Nanotechnology, a research area that covers many scientific disciplines such as Medicine, Biology, Physics and Chemistry has found a great interest in research institutions and wide applications in industries. This is due to many reasons; from these we note the control down to the molecular level providing thereby a greatest efficiency and an important added value as a reason of the low cost of...
