Sedentary behavior in children by wearable cameras: development of an annotation protocol

Hänggi, Johanna M. ; Spinnler, Simon ; Christodoulides, Efstathios ; Gramespacher, Elke ; Taube, Wolfgang ; Doherty, Aiden

In: American Journal of Preventive Medicine, 2020, vol. 59, no. 6, p. 880–886

Introduction: There is increasing evidence that not all types of sedentary behavior have the same harmful effects on children's health. Hence, there has been a growing interest in the use of wearable cameras. The aim of this study is to develop a protocol to categorize children's wearable camera data into sedentary behavior components. Methods: Wearable camera data were collected in 3...

Cutaneous inputs to dorsal column nuclei in adult macaque monkeys subjected to unilateral lesion of the primary motor cortex or of the cervical spinal cord and treatments promoting axonal growth

Savidan, Julie ; Beaud, Marie-Laure ; Rouiller, Eric M

In: Neuroscience Insights, 2020, vol. 15, p. 2633105520973991

The highly interconnected somatosensory and motor systems are subjected to connectivity changes at close or remote locations following a central nervous system injury. What is the impact of unilateral injury of the primary motor cortex (hand area; MCI) or of the cervical cord (hemisection at C7-C8 level; SCI) on the primary somatosensory (cutaneous) inputs to the dorsal column nuclei (DCN) in...

Optogenetic stimulation of basal forebrain parvalbumin neurons activates the default mode network and associated behaviors

Lozano-Montes, Laura ; Dimanico, Marta ; Mazloum, Reza ; Li, Wenxue ; Nair, Jayakrishnan ; Kintscher, Michael ; Schneggenburger, Ralf ; Harvey, Michael ; Rainer, Gregor

In: Cell Reports, 2020, vol. 33, no. 6, p. 108359

Activation of the basal forebrain (BF) has been associated with increased attention, arousal, and a heightened cortical representation of the external world. In addition, BF has been implicated in the regulation of the default mode network (DMN) and associated behaviors. Here, we provide causal evidence for a role of BF in DMN regulation, highlighting a prominent role of parvalbumin (PV)...

Biophysics of temporal interference stimulation

Mirzakhalili, Ehsan ; Barra, Beatrice ; Capogrosso, Marco ; Lempka, Scott F.

In: Cell Systems, 2020, vol. 11, no. 6, p. 557-572.e5

Temporal interference (TI) is a non-invasive neurostimulation technique that utilizes high-frequency external electric fields to stimulate deep neuronal structures without affecting superficial, off-target structures. TI represents a potential breakthrough for treating conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease and chronic pain. However, early clinical work on TI stimulation was met with mixed...

Epilepsy-associated neurocognitive disorders (EAND) in an onchocerciasis-endemic rural community in Cameroon: A population-based case–control study

K.Njamnshi, Alfred ; Chokote, Eric-Samuel ; Ngarka, Leonard ; Nfor, Leonard N. ; Tabaha, Earnest N. ; Basseguin Atchou, Jonas G. ; Angwaforbe, Samuel A. ; Nkouonlack, Cyrille ; Mengnjo, Michel K. ; Njamnshi, Wepnyu Y. ; Demaa, Fidèle ; Tataha, Godwin Y. ; Zoung-KanyiBissek, Anne-Cecile ; Annoni, Jean-Marie ; Ruffieux, Nicolas

In: Epilepsy & Behavior, 2020, vol. 112, no. 2020-, p. 107437

Epilepsy affects at least 50 million individuals worldwide, especially in sub-Saharan Africa (sSA). Cognitive impairment is common in people with epilepsy (PWE) yet, little is known on the burden of cognitive impairment in people with epilepsy in sSA. This study was thus designed to assess cognitive impairment in PWE or epilepsy- associated neurocognitive disorders (EAND) in a rural population...

Risk factors during first 1,000 days of life for carotid intima-media thickness in infants, children, and adolescents: A systematic review with meta-analyses

Epure, Adina Mihaela ; Rios-Leyvraz, Magali ; Anker, Daniela ; Di Bernardo, Stefano ; Costa, Bruno R. da ; Chiolero, Arnaud ; Sekarski, Nicole

In: PLOS Medicine, 2020, vol. 17, no. 11, p. e1003414

The first 1,000 days of life, i.e., from conception to age 2 years, could be a critical period for cardiovascular health. Increased carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) is a surrogate marker of atherosclerosis. We performed a systematic review with meta- analyses to assess (1) the relationship between exposures or interventions in the first 1,000 days of life and CIMT in infants, children,...

Blood pressure control and complex health conditions in older adults: impact of recent hypertension management guidelines

Anker, Daniela ; Santos-Eggimann, Brigitte ; Zwahlen, Marcel ; Santschi, Valérie ; Rodondi, Nicolas ; Wolfson, Christina ; Chiolero, Arnaud

In: Journal of Human Hypertension, 2020, p. -

The American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) 2017 guidelines for hypertension management lowered blood pressure (BP) thresholds to 130/80 mmHg to define hypertension while the European Society of Cardiology and the European Society of Hypertension (ESC/ESH) 2018 guidelines retained 140/90 mmHg. Both guidelines recommend adapting management for older ...

Fighting the spread of Covid-19 : was the Swiss lockdown worth it?

Gatti, Nicolò ; Retali, Beatrice

The implementation of a lockdown to control the Covid-19 pandemic has led to a strong debate in several countries. This makes it crucial to shed light on the actual benefits of such kind of policy. To this purpose, we focus on the Swiss lockdown during the first wave of Covid-19 infections and estimate the number of potentially saved lives. To predict the number of deaths in absence of any...

Visualization of the Thebesian veins during coronary angiography in a 57-year-old woman

Scoglio, Martin ; Cook, Stéphane

In: Oxford Medical Case Reports, 2020, vol. 2020, no. 7, p. omaa053

A 57-year-old woman was hospitalized due to a type 2 respiratory failure. Electrocardiogram at admission showed inverted T waves in leads V2–V4. Coronary angiogram was performed showing no relevant stenosis. However, this exam allowed visualization of the Thebesian veins outlining the left ventricle.
