La Sentinelle

The first issue of La Sentinelle appeared on January 4th, 1890. Founded by the Union des sociétés ouvrières of La Chaux-de-Fonds with Walter Biolley (1866-1905) as editor, it became the mirror of the Socialist Party’s ideas in 1896. Strongly committed to social justice and the working class, the journal was shaped by political personalities such as Charles Naine (1874-1926) and Ernest-Paul Graber (1875-1956). Often plagued by financial problems, in 1965 it merged with the Vaud and Geneva Socialist daily newspaper "Le Peuple" and became "Le Peuple, La Sentinelle." This eminent French-speaking Socialist daily survived in this form until May 19, 1971, the date of the publication of the last issue.
