Comparing impacts of alien plants and animals in Europe using a standard scoring system

Kumschick, Sabrina ; Bacher, Sven ; Evans, Thomas ; Marková, Zuzana ; Pergl, Jan ; Pyšek, Petr ; Vaes-Petignat, Sibylle ; Veer, Gabriel van der ; Vilà, Montserrat ; Nentwig, Wolfgang

In: Journal of Applied Ecology, 2015, vol. 52, no. 3, p. 552–561

Alien species can change the recipient environment in various ways, and some of them cause considerable damage. Understanding such impacts is crucial to direct management actions. This study addresses the following questions: Is it possible to quantify impact across higher taxa in a comparative manner? Do impacts differ between taxonomic groups? How are environmental and socio-economic impacts...

Higher establishment success in specialized parasitoids: support for the existence of trade-offs in the evolution of specialization

Rossinelli, Silvia ; Bacher, Sven

In: Functional Ecology, 2015, vol. 29, no. 2, p. 277–284

Most animals do not feed on all the resources available to them, but the mechanisms behind the evolution of dietary specialization are still debated. A central but unanswered question is whether specialists generally gain fitness advantages on their resource compared to generalists, experiencing a trade-off between the ability to use a broad range of resources and the fitness reached on each...

Quantifying invasion risk: the relationship between establishment probability and founding population size

Duncan, Richard P. ; Blackburn, Tim M. ; Rossinelli, Silvia ; Bacher, Sven

In: Methods in Ecology and Evolution, 2014, vol. 5, no. 11, p. 1255–1263

1. Invasive species usually start out as small colonizing populations that are prone to extinction through demographic stochasticity and Allee effects, leading to a positive relationship between establishment probability and founding population size. However, establishment success also depends on the environment to which species are introduced: for a given species, some locations will be more...

Ecological impacts of alien species: quantification, scope, caveats, and recommendations

Kumschick, Sabrina ; Gaertner, Mirijam ; Vilà, Montserrat ; Essl, Franz ; Jeschke, Jonathan M. ; Pyšek, Petr ; Ricciardi, Anthony ; Bacher, Sven ; Blackburn, Tim M. ; Dick, Jaimie T.A. ; Evans, Thomas ; Hulme, Philip E. ; Kühn, Ingolf ; Mrugała, Agata ; Pergl, Jan ; Rabitsch, Wolfgang ; Richardson, David M. ; Sendek, Agnieszka ; Winter, Marten

In: BioScience, 2015, vol. 65, no. 1, p. 55-63

Despite intensive research during the past decade on the effects of alien species, invasion science still lacks the capacity to accurately predict the impacts of those species and, therefore, to provide timely advice to managers on where limited resources should be allocated. This capacity has been limited partly by the context-dependent nature of ecological impacts, research highly skewed toward...

Virulence of in vivo and in vitro produced conidia of Metarhizium brunneum strains for control of wireworms

Eckard, Sonja ; Ansari, Minshad A. ; Bacher, Sven ; Butt, Tariq M. ; Enkerli, Jürg ; Grabenweger, Giselher

In: Crop Protection, 2014, vol. 64, p. 137–142

Wireworms are the soil inhabiting larvae of click beetles and can cause severe damage to arable crops such as potatoes (Solanum tuberosum, L.). Several strains of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium brunneum (Petch) are pathogenic to wireworms. In this study, three European strains of M. brunneum were tested in the laboratory against the most damaging wireworm species in Europe, Agriotes...

A unified classification of alien species based on the magnitude of their environmental impacts

Blackburn, Tim M. ; Essl, Franz ; Evans, Thomas ; Hulme, Philip E. ; Jeschke, Jonathan M. ; Kühn, Ingolf ; Kumschick, Sabrina ; Marková, Zuzana ; Mrugała, Agata ; Nentwig, Wolfgang ; Pergl, Jan ; Pyšek, Petr ; Rabitsch, Wolfgang ; Ricciardi, Anthony ; Richardson, David M. ; Sendek, Agnieszka ; Vilà, Montserrat ; Wilson, John R. U. ; Winte, Marten ; Genovesi, Piero ; Bacher, Sven

In: PLoS Biol, 2014, vol. 12, no. 5, p. e1001850

Species moved by human activities beyond the limits of their native geographic ranges into areas in which they do not naturally occur (termed aliens) can cause a broad range of significant changes to recipient ecosystems; however, their impacts vary greatly across species and the ecosystems into which they are introduced. There is therefore a critical need for a standardised method to evaluate,...

Defining the Impact of Non-Native Species

Jeschke, Jonathan M. ; Bacher, Sven ; Blackburn, Tim M. ; Dick, Jaimie T.A. ; Essl, Franz ; Evans, Thomas ; Gaertner, Mirijam ; Hulme, Philip E. ; Kühn, Ingolf ; MrugałA, Agata ; Pergl, Jan ; Pyšek, Petr ; Rabitsch, Wolfgang ; Ricciardi, Anthony ; Richardson, David M. ; Sendek, Agnieszka ; Vilà, Montserrat ; Winter, Marten ; Kumschick, Sabrina

In: Conservation Biology, 2014, p. -

Non-native species cause changes in the ecosystems to which they are introduced. These changes, or some of them, are usually termed impacts; they can be manifold and potentially damaging to ecosystems and biodiversity. However, the impacts of most non-native species are poorly understood, and a synthesis of available information is being hindered because authors often do not clearly define...

Quarantine arthropod invasions in Europe: the role of climate, hosts and propagule pressure

Bacon, Steven J. ; Aebi, Alexandre ; Calanca, Pierluigi ; Bacher, Sven

In: Diversity and Distributions, 2014, vol. 20, no. 1, p. 84-89

Aim: To quantify the relative importance of propagule pressure, climate-matching and host availability for the invasion of agricultural pest arthropods in Europe and to forecast newly emerging pest species and European areas with the highest risk of arthropod invasion under current climate and a future climate scenario (A1F1).Location: Europe. Methods: We quantified propagule pressure,...

Addressing a critique of the TEASI framework for invasive species risk assessment

Leung, Brian ; Roura-Pascual, Nuria ; Bacher, Sven ; Heikkilä, Jaakko ; Brotons, Lluis ; Burgman, Mark A ; Dehnen-Schmutz, Katharina ; Essl, Franz ; Hulme, Philip E ; Richardson, David M ; Sol, Daniel ; Vilà, Montserrat

In: Ecology Letters, 2013, p. -

We address criticism that the Transport, Establishment, Abundance, Spread, Impact (TEASI) framework does not facilitate objective mapping of risk assessment methods nor defines best practice. We explain why TEASI is appropriate for mapping, despite inherent challenges, and how TEASI offers considerations for best practices, rather than suggesting one best practice.

Bottom-Up and top-down effects influence Bruchid beetle individual performance but not population densities in the field

Zaugg, Isabelle ; Benrey, Betty ; Bacher, Sven

In: PLoS ONE, 2013, vol. 8, no. 1, p. e55317

Plant quality (bottom-up) and natural enemies (top-down) can influence the individual performance of herbivorous insects on their host plants, but few studies measured at the same time the influence on population densities in the field. We investigated if plant quality of different wild common bean populations, Phaseolus vulgaris L. (Fabaceae), affects the performance of the bean weevil,...
