Oxidation of the non-mesomorphic ferrocene derivative 1 with silver toluene-4-sulfonate gave the ferrocenium derivative 2, which showed a monotropic columnar phase. The latter two-dimensional phase is composed of ribbons, in which derivative 2 is organized into bilayers, and has a centered rectangular symmetry with a = 318.3 Å and c = 94.9 Å. The Mössbauer...

The synthesis and liquid-crystalline properties of a first-generation dendritic core substituted with six mesomorphic ferrocene units are reported; the investigated compound exhibited a broad enantiotropic smectic A phase (polarized optical microscopy, DSC, and XRD studies) and good thermal stability (thermogravimetry).

The synthesis and liquid-crystalline properties of tetracatenar covalent and H-bonded bis-ferrocene derivatives 1 and 2, respectively, are reported. Both compounds gave rise to enantiotropic columnar liquid-crystalline behavior with a hexagonal molecular organization. To explore the possibility to obtain also calamitic liquid-crystalline phases from H-bonded ferrocene-containing liquid crystals,...
