Neuralink and Beyond: Challenges of Creating an Enhanced Human

Gurtner, Dimitri

(Internal working papers DIUF ; 21-01)

This article is a literature review of Neuralink, brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) and their applications, followed by future possibilities of BMIs and their potential impacts. Currently, BMIs predominantly have therapeutic applications, such as helping people with spinal cord injury by allowing them to control a computer directly with their brain. However, BMIs can also improve learning,...

Prevenire le radicalizzazioni. Collaborazione tra Stato e organizzazioni musulmane = Radikalisierungen vorbeugen : Zusammenarbeit zwischen Staat und muslimischen Organisationen

Schmid, Hansjörg ; Schneuwly Purdie, Mallory ; Lang, Andrea

(CSIS-Papers ; 2)

I musulmani nello spazio pubblico e mediatico = Muslime im öffentlichen und medialen Raum

Schmid, Hansjörg ; Schneuwly Purdie, Mallory ; Lang, Andrea

(CSIS-Papers ; 5)

Japanese City Pop abroad : findings from an online music community survey

Sommet, Moritz ; Kato, Ken

City Pop is a loosely defined musical genre that first emerged in Japan in the late 1970s. Adverse Effects of Monitoring: Evidence from a field experiment

Herz, Holger ; Zihlmann, Christian

(Working Papers SES ; 522)

We conduct a field experiment with remote workers to assess potential adverse effects of monitoring. We find that monitoring reduces the average performance of workers, in particular among the intrinsically motivated workforce. Moreover, monitoring cultivates the average worker: There are fewer high performers and the variance in performance is significantly reduced. Importantly, we show that...

Assessing the effects of seasonal tariff-rate quotas on vegetable prices in Switzerland

Loginova, Daria ; Portmann, Marco ; Huber, Martin

(Working Papers SES ; 521)

Causal estimation of the short-term effects of tariff-rate quotas (TRQs) on vegetable producer prices is hampered by the large variety and different growing seasons of vegetables and is therefore rarely performed. We quantify the effects of Swiss seasonal TRQs on domestic producer prices of a variety of vegetables based on a difference-indifferences estimation using a novel dataset of weekly...

Wokusch, Susanne ; Li Rosi, Tiziana ; Margonis-Pasinetti, Rosanna ; Zoller, Veronika

Things versus People: Gender Differences in Vocational Interests and in Occupational Preferences

Kuhn, Andreas ; Wolter, Stefan C.

Occupational choices remain strongly segregated by gender, for reasons not yet fully understood. In this paper, we use detailed information on the cognitive requirements in 130 distinct learnable occupations in the Swiss apprenticeship system to describe the broad job content in these occupations along the things-versus-people dimension. We first show that our occupational classification along...
