English Italian The principal aim of this study is the analysis of communicational interactions between teachers and students, and between the students themselves. More precisely, the research analyzes “what happens” during several lessons of a scientific (mathematics) and a humanistic (Italian as the first language) subject. The fundamental purpose is to verify how the same student, according to the characteristics of each subject, to the teaching style, and the different learning contexts, contributes to the construction of knowledge. If we only consider the number of years of obligatory schooling, we see that the time that a student spends in the classroom represents a large part of her/his entire life. The experiences made in this specific context are important not only on the level of the learned competences and skills, since through the study of those interactions (micro-level) is possible to verify big social phenomena (macro level). In fact, it is inside the classroom that the first elements of the relationship bet wen instruction and social inequities can be identified. Through a qualitative approach based on the direct observation of several ordinary educational situations (audio and video registered), attended by students of the last year of obligatory schooling in the region of Switzerland that speaks Italian (pupils are 14/15 years old), we have tried to answer the following questions: How does the teacher communicate (verbally and not verbally) during the lesson? Does s/he interact in the same way with all the students in the class? If not, which are the factors that influence her/his way of communicating to the students? How do the students interact in the classroom? Do they behave in the same way in every lesson of every subject? Which are the factors that eventually influence their behaviour? Which is the impact of the communicative dynamics of the classroom on the teaching/learning process? In what ways, and to what extent, do the experiences lived in the classroom determine the scholar and/or professional career of the student? The questions are of great importance, because their answers allow us to understand the value that teaching/learning dynamics have in the construction of the teenagers’ identity and in their future career.
