English German (-)-β-pinene is an important and cheap precursor of natural products because of its frequent natural occurrence in high enantiopurity of about 95%. Ring opening complexation of (—)-β-pinene leads to the so called seco-pinene complex which can be isomerised to a diene or an iso-seco-pinene complex in the presence of a protic or a Lewis acid. In the present work the reactivity of these pinene derived ironcarbonyl complexes was examined: Lewis acid catalysed reactions of the seco- or iso-seco-pinene complex lead to bicyclic cetones. The diene complex can be oxidised to the corresponding triene complex. Decomplexation of the seco-pinene or the diene complex in the presence of oxidants generates functionalised cyclic enons. Reductive decomplexation of the seco-pinene complex produces olefins and/or aldehydes. To demonstrate the synthetic value of the seco-pinene complex (+)-trans-y.iron was synthesised starting from (-)-β-pinene. seco-pinene-Fe(CO)3 is an excellent precursor for the ring A of the ABC ringsystem of taxol. Its ten carbon atoms originating from (—)-β-pinene correspond to the ring A of taxol. A new route has been devised for extending the above mentioned triene complex into an advanced intermediate of taxadiene.
