English French The aim of this work was to carry out a field study on the appplication of conservation in a state scientific institution (but not a museum) containing a rich scientific heritage. The exercise was organised in such a way that it could be carried out on the site of the Besançon Observatory. The setting up of such a project had to begin with an organisational phase of a special type, since the institution didn’t possess a predefined conservation policy. Thus, it was by taking an inductive step starting with the intention of contributing to the conservation of the site’s collection of scientific instruments that the idea for this project was formulated, and a working structure set up. Following this, some instruments were selected for a preliminary study, which then resulted in a mandate to conserve one instrument only. The execution of this mandate then focused both on a written record of the conservation of scientific instruments (a part of what are commonly called technical artifacts), as well as on exploring a possible field of action for the conservation of such artifacts. L’objectif de ce travail était d’accomplir une étude de terrain sur l’exercice de la conservationrestauration dans le cadre d’une institution publique non-muséale abritant un riche patrimoine scientifique, en s’appuyant sur une intervention organisée de sorte qu’elle soit praticable sur le site de l’Observatoire de Besançon. L’établissement d’un tel projet commence par une phase d’organisation d’un type particulier, puisque l’institution ne dispose pas d’une politique muséographique prédéfinie. C’est donc par une démarche inductive partant de l’intention de contribuer à la conservation de la collection d’instruments scientifiques du site, que l’idée de ce projet a été formulée, qu’une structure de travail s’est ensuite constituée, puis que des objets ont été sélectionnés pour étude préalable, donnant lieu à un mandat de mise en conservation sur un seul objet. La réalisation de ce mandat a donc visé d’une part, à contribuer à la documentation d’une approche en conservation-restauration sur les instruments scientifiques, que l’on peut admettre être, en langage courant, des objets techniques, d’autre part à explorer un champ d’action possible pour la conservation-restauration des objets techniques.
